Alopecia Awareness: You are not alone

Alopecia Areata is often a uniquely challenging and rather isolating time. We at Australian Wig Company, want you to know that you are not alone.

The mental health strain of getting Alopecia is tremendous. The feeling of not understanding what’s happening, why it’s happening and how to stop it is very common. Don’t feel embarrassed about needing to wear a hat or a wig for comfort. We are all too familiar with that feeling!

Alopecia Areata is a common autoimmune skin disease that can cause hair loss on the face, scalp and even sometimes on other areas of the body. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation’s statistics state that 2% of the population will be affected at least once in their lifetime.

There are three main types of Alopecia that are quite common. There is Alopecia Areata, which results in patches of hair loss on the scalp. Then there is Alopecia Areata Totalis which is a total loss of hair only on the head. Alopecia Areata Universalis is the result of a complete loss of hair to the entire body.

The hair follicles in all forms of Alopecia are still alive and ready to continue hair growth. They only resume to do so once they receive the correct signals from the body. In many cases, regrowth occurs without any treatment. Unfortunately, we don’t have any exact knowledge as to what causes Alopecia Areata. It is theorized to be a combination of environmental factors and genetics.

Hair loss is a life changing experience. We at Australian Wig Company believe that it is vital to continue supporting the cause by creating awareness.

What can be done? Well, the good new is that we have a range of options when it comes to hair loss solutions. Wigs of today can be just like wearing a comfortable beanie and in the early stages of alopecia we even have several solutions that don’t require you wear a full wig.

The best way to find out what is going to be right for you as you go through this journey is to have a personal consultation with a hair loss solution specialist.
